ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OR DIRECTOR, ADVISORY SERVICES (LONDON, UK)

POSITION OVERVIEW

Article One is a specialized strategy and management consultancy with expertise in human rights, responsible technology, sustainability, and responsible supply chains. We are looking for a senior Advisory Services position, Associate Director or Director level, to be based in the UK. The final level and responsibilities of the position will be determined based on the candidate’s professional experience, technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and demonstrated ability to manage client engagements and drive business development. 

The successful candidate will play a key role in growing Article One’s advisory services practice, including expanding our client base and deepening relationships with existing partners. They will also lead high-impact consulting engagements that help companies identify and address human rights and environmental risks, strengthen governance and due diligence systems, and align their strategies with emerging regulatory expectations and international standards. 

This role involves originating and leading client engagements, managing multidisciplinary project teams, engaging with diverse stakeholders, and playing an active role in business development, client relationship management, event programming, and thought leadership in the field of responsible business. As part of a dynamic and fast-growing social enterprise, the successful candidate will bring strong project management experience along with an entrepreneurial and collaborative approach. Working in a rapidly evolving field, the role offers the chance to partner with some of the world’s most influential companies to help advance responsible business practices and positive social impact. 

The position is a full-time remote position based in London, or alternatively, remote working from anywhere in the UK, if willing to travel to London frequently. The role may require up to 20% travel for project-related fieldwork. Please note that applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United Kingdom or USA at the time of application. RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will take on the following responsibilities: 

Business Development and Client Relationships:

  • Identify and originate new client engagements aligned with Article One’s practice areas, including cultivating relationships with prospective clients and strategic partners.
  • Lead proposal development, client pitches, and commercial negotiations.
  • Develop and expand relationships with existing clients, identifying opportunities to deepen engagements and deliver additional services.
  • Contribute to Article One’s growth strategy, including identifying new market and sector opportunities.
  • Organize and lead Article One events and convenings in Europe and represent Article One at external events, conferences, and multistakeholder initiatives.

Client Engagement and Project Delivery:

  • Lead consulting engagements across one or more of Article One’s practice areas (business and human rights, responsible technology, sustainability, and responsible supply chains).
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior clients, helping translate complex human rights and sustainability challenges into practical business strategies.
  • Design and implement human rights and environmental due diligence processes, including human rights impact assessments (HRIAs), risk assessments, and governance reviews.
  • Lead or oversee stakeholder and rightsholder engagement, including interviews, consultations, and field research.
  • Draft and oversee the preparation and presentation of high-quality client deliverables, including reports, workshops, and executive briefings.
  • Support clients in aligning their strategies with international frameworks and emerging regulations, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and other relevant legislation and reporting standards.

Project and Team Management:

  • Manage multiple client engagements simultaneously and ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Lead project teams and coordinate the contributions of team members across all levels of seniority.
  • Provide mentorship, training, and constructive feedback to junior team members to support their professional development.
  • Establish strong internal collaboration across global teams.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate must be passionate about responsible business practices and will bring a strong combination of technical expertise, client advisory experience, and business development capabilities.

Preferred qualifications include: 

  • 8-15+ years of relevant experience in Article One’s practice areas within a consultancy, law firm, or in an in-house role.
  • Proven track record of success developing and managing client relationships or corporate programs in Article One’s practice areas, including contributing to origination and growth of advisory engagements.
  • Demonstrated ability to originate or grow client engagements, including experience leading proposals, developing client relationships, or contributing to business development strategy.
  • Excellent research, analytical, writing, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to both technical and executive audiences.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple, disparate projects simultaneously and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong familiarity with international frameworks and regulatory developments related to responsible business (e.g., UNGPs, OECD Guidelines, CSDDD, CSRD, Modern Slavery legislation, Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosure, Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosure, Global Reporting Initiative Standards).
  • Experience in sustainability and corporate environmental programs preferred.
  • Experience managing or mentoring people and supporting their professional development.
  • Ability to undertake business travel about 20% of time, including international travel.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, high ethical standards, passion for promoting responsible business practices, and a humble, collaborative, and empathetic approach to engagements with diverse stakeholders across sectors and geographies.
