As a Senior Associate, Claire Kaula supports clients across Article One’s services in business and human rights, responsible technology, sustainability, regulatory alignment, and responsible supply chains. She leads work on aligning companies’ strategies and assessments with new and upcoming global business and human rights and environmental regulations, while meeting UNGP expectations. This includes the EU CSDDD, EU CSRD, and targeted legislation such as on conflict minerals and modern slavery. Her work encompasses assessing human rights and environmental impacts across industries and geographies by conducting assessments with rigorous research, stakeholder and rightsholder engagement, and onsite field visits that results in actionable next steps for clients.

Claire has expertise in operational-level grievance mechanisms. Prior to joining Article One, she was a researcher, and later the supervisor, of the Center for International Law and Policy’s Operational-level Grievance Mechanism Project building a database tracking companies’ grievance mechanisms over time. She continued her research during her masters, writing her thesis on implementing effective grievance mechanisms in practice. She now supports Article One’s clients by assessing and developing their grievance mechanisms.

Previously, she interned at FrieslandCampina, a Dutch multinational dairy cooperative, joining their human rights team, and at CHAKO, a social enterprise, supporting their work addressing environmental impacts of the tourism industry in Zanzibar. Claire also worked as a Junior Research Associate at the Public International Law and Policy Group, a pro bono law firm, drafting memorandums on international human rights complaint mechanisms for the Virtual Human Rights Lawyer Project, and regularly updating the Lawyering Justice Blog on the International Criminal Court’s activities.

Claire received her JD from New England Law | Boston, LLM in Public International Law from Leiden University, and BA in Social Sciences from University College Utrecht where she specialized in sociology and anthropology and minored in statistics. She is fluent in English and German. After working at Article One’s Dublin hub for three years, she is now based in New York City.
