Iain currently works as a consultant with a particular focus on the intersection of human rights and the digital world, building on his ability to act as a bridge between the UN, human rights, and humanitarian organizations and companies, especially in the AI and digital world.
He also executive coaches human rights and humanitarian professionals and those working in the field of corporate social responsibility.
Most recently Iain served on the Meta human rights team where he helped develop the company’s human rights policy, worked on human rights due diligence and reporting, participated in shaping the company’s response to conflict and crisis and led much of the engagement with the United Nations and human rights and humanitarian groups.
Iain began his career as a humanitarian worker and spent over ten years working in conflict zones in Sub-Saharan Africa, focused on supporting displaced and conflict-affected children, mostly with UNICEF. Feeling frustrated by the limitations of humanitarian action, he moved to Amnesty International as director of its UN office, leading the organization’s advocacy with the UN system before moving to Human Rights Watch, where he led the organization’s investigations and reporting on human rights violations around the world for 16 years. At HRW, Iain developed new areas of work, such as the rights of those with disabilities and human rights and the environment as well as new methodologies to investigate and document human rights abuses.
He also worked as an adjunct professor of human rights at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University from 2018 to 2022.
Iain has a Master’s degree with distinction from the London School of Economics.
